In the final part of the book, comprising two chapters, the authors examine ethical theory and method in ethics. Specifically, they consider four influential theories—Utilitarianism, Kantianism, Rights theory and Virtue ethics—and how these cast light on important aspects of moral thinking in the biological and medical sciences.
Overall, therefore, the four principles are just that—principles. Indeed, the authors have always argued that competing moral considerations validly override respect for autonomy under many conditions: to give one example, if personal choices endanger public health.
Finally, in addition to the book itself, there is now also a companion website that includes suggestions on how the book may be used effectively in an educational context with questions on each chapter to assess understanding, additional reading, useful exercises and cases for discussion.
Overall, the authors have expanded their arguments and discussion in the field of bioethics maintaining this as one of the most important texts in the field. It is essential reading for anyone with an interest in bioethics; for occupational health professionals, it is a book that should be accessible on the library shelf. Materials include the following: summaries of each chapter in the text; goals for student learning related to the material in each chapter; reading and media resources for use by instructors as well as students; relevant weblinks ; and sample quiz and essay questions for each chapter. PowerPoint slides covering the basic information of each chapter are also available.
While the volume of resources and information available on each of these topics is enormous, we have attempted to point to readings, media, resources, and weblinks of broad interest that can be used in a variety of classrooms and learning environments. Sample essay and quiz questions cover as much of the text as possible. The sample essay and quiz questions that are marked with an asterisk in the Instructor Resources are also available in the Student Resources for students to access and view.
Those not marked with an asterisk are not viewable by students. In general, the readings and media resources provided in the instructor materials are suitable as course assignments for students to view or read, discuss, report on, and so forth. Weblinks will likely be more useful as general references for students and as aids for clarifying terms used in the text.
